Woman's Obituary Shocks, Quickly Goes Viral

Eleni Pinnow arrived at her sister's house one day to find a disturbing note. Her sister had committed suicide. When she wrote her sister's obituary, she knew what she had to do.

Pinnow said that even in death, her sister Aletha tried to protect her. She arrived at her sister's house and found identical notes on the front and back door.

“Eleni, if you’re the first one here don’t go in the basement," the note read. "Just call 911. I don’t want you to see me like this. I love you!"

Police arrived and confirmed Pinnow's worst fears-- her sister was dead. When writing the obituary, she decided to be brutally honest—honest about suicide, about depression, and about her sister.

"Depression lied to my sister, told her that she was worthless," Pinnow wrote for the Washington Post. "A burden. Unlovable. Undeserving of life. I imagine these lies were like a kind of permanent white noise in her life — a running narration of how unworthy she was. After years of the lies and the torment, my sister believed that depression told her the truth."

"She was so wrong. Depression lies. I have to tell the truth."

The truth, Pinnow says, is that Aletha was amazing. She hopes no one else listens to depression.

"Aletha slipped from my grasp and I cannot bring her back. I can only urge others to distrust the voice of depression. I can plead for people to seek help and treatment. I can talk about depression and invite others to the conversation. I can tell everyone that will listen that depression lies. I can tell the truth."
