Woman Has Big Warning For Others After Common Habit Causes Major Infection

Louisville, Kentucky resident Audree Kopp was moving earlier this year. It was the usual hard work of packing and moving and unpacking, but by late afternoon, Kopp felt a swelling on her wrist.

"It just kept getting bigger and redder and worse," she said.

Kopp went to the doctor the next day, and she began a course of antibiotics. Her wrist continued to sell, and she eventually had to have emergency surgery.

"They said I needed surgery, and thank God I caught it in time, or I could have had sepsis," Kopp noted.

"She had a large abscess on the back of her wrist, so I basically made an incision and drained the puss all the way down," explained doctor Amit Gupta at Norton Healthcare.

Gupta also highlighted that lab cultures determined that Kopp actually had three separate infections in her wrist area.

Kopp told a reporter from a local Louisville TV station she was lucky and things could have turned out much worse. "It could have been a whole different ballgame, once it gets into your bloodstream, people have been known to go into a coma, your body shuts down it could have been way worse,” she pointed out.
