Video Of Restaurant Cook Helping Veteran Melts Hearts

A viral Thanksgiving video is still bringing smiles to people’s faces. The video shows an employee at a Georgia fast food restaurant helping an elderly veteran cut his pancakes. The video has received enormous online traction, especially on Facebook, where it has racked up tens of thousands of likes and comments. The video has since been uploaded to YouTube and is quickly garnering even more views and comments.

The recorded act of kindness has since been praised around the world, brightening the days of thousands of social media users and online commenters. The heartwarming scene of compassion was caught by another customer at the restaurant, Dallas Smith Jr., who was dining at Georgia’s Huddle House the day before Thanksgiving festivities kicked off.

The video, captured on Mr. Smith Jr.’s mobile phone, shows the elderly veteran getting into his seat and wincing as he hits his left hand on the table. According to Fox 8, the unnamed elderly gentleman had recently been shot in his left hand and was finding it difficult to grasp ahold of anything in his injured palm.

Unsurprisingly, the gunshot injury made it difficult for the elderly veteran to cut and eat his pancakes. Mr. Smith Jr. witnessed the man’s struggle and was on the brink of standing up to ask staff to help him when he saw one of the cooks approaching him.

The cook in question, known only as Ms. Wanda, stepped up to the veteran’s table and immediately started helping him cut the pancakes.

After recording what happened, Mr. Smith Jr. just knew that he had to share this special Thanksgiving moment, uploading the video to his Facebook page. He never expected what happened next. The video quickly went viral, racking up more than 200,00 views. When local media outlets began reporting on the story, the elderly veteran realized that he was momentarily famous.

At this moment, the veteran contacted Mr. Smith Jr. and thanked him for capturing the heartwarming moment. In the same conversation, the elderly man told Smith Jr. that he was a former Army veteran. The astonished man also told Mr. Smith Jr. how he had injured his left hand, revealing that he had been shot while attempting to defuse a domestic situation in his neighborhood.

Unsurprisingly, Mr. Smith Jr. is shocked by the response his video has received, telling WSB: “It was kind of a warm feeling in there anyway because everyone knows everybody. It threw me so far off guard when she did it. For me, it was just a blessing to see.”

As American society slips further into division – whether its conflict over politics, race, sexuality, or gender – it's stories like this that helps remind people that Thanksgiving, and every other day of the year, is a time to be thankful for what you have and be mindful about all the things other people have never experienced.

Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that, although Ms. Wanda’s actions are admirable, acting with compassion and integrity should be a norm rather than an exception.
