Valuables Rain on Small Turkish Village

In a small village in Turkey this year, money practically fell out of the sky. Residents of the town are now rich, thanks to valuables from space that landed in their homeland.

A small village near the city of Bingol with a population of 3,000 was showered with space rocks. In a rural town where many people are simple, poor farmers trying to eke out livings and scrape by, the event has been a boon. The fragments that landed in the Turkish village are worth thousands of dollars.

Many consider the fragments 'Allah's gift,’ but 'Vesta’s gift’ might be more appropriate. Named for the Roman goddess of hearth and home, Vesta is the brightest known asteroid and the second largest. It's so big, astronomers at one time thought it was a planet. It's sometimes visible to the earth with the naked eye. The Dawn mission in 2011 involved a space craft orbiting the great rock.

Those who have found rock fragments from Vesta have been selling them and making money hand over fist. The largest fragment-- about 1.5 kg -- has drawn offers of over $100,000.

Of course, the Turkish government is now deciding how the people will be taxed for their new-found wealth. Vesta giveth, and the government taketh away.
