Teen's Hair Gets Her Kicked Off Of Cheerleading Squad (Photos)

A Texas mom says her daughter has kicked off an elite high school cheer squad, all because she had curly hair. The cheer squad director says the hair wasn't the problem.

Makayla Fallaw's curly hair has been at the center of a cheerleading controversy. When her mother Jenny got a note home saying Makayla had to straighten her hair for competition to match the other girls' hair, she felt the need to fight for her daughter.

"I felt like it might make my daughter feel like her hair is not good enough because she's not like other girls," said Fallaw to KTRK-TV.

Elite cheer squad regulations about appearance are strict, and the regulation hairstyle is wearing a straight, high ponytail. Points can be taken off in competition for a lack of uniformity.

"It would destroy her hair, so I wanted to explain to them my reasoning," Fallaw said.

According to the cheerleading All-Star Director Kevin Tonner, they were willing to work with the hair. It was the mother's attitude that resulted in the decision to kick Makayla off the team. "We were trying to make the exception, we were trying to find a compromise and a happy medium," he said.

According to Tonner, his wife is a hairdresser and they tried to show Makayla and her mother how to straighten the child's hair for competition without damaging it. The teen wouldn't have had to permanently straighten her hair with chemicals; she would have only had to style it for competition.

"Long story short, it got heated, we respectfully asked her leave," said Tonner.
