This Teacher Has a New Rule for Her Young Students

Teaching is a tough job, especially in middle schools. Trying to keep on top of a room full of 13-year-olds can be a little like trying to herd cats. One teacher seemed to have reached her limit with kids when it comes to them trying to ditch class, so she took a hardline stance with her hall pass.

Parents who saw a picture of the pass online believe that the teacher's policy is cruel and unjust.

The Memphis, Tennessee teacher, known only as Ms. White, works at Aspire Hanley Middle School. She distributed hall passes to her students, and one parent was so shocked by it she didn't know what to make of it.

She snapped a photo of the pass and posted it to Twitter to get other people's opinions.

The pass stipulated that kids only get to use it twice p3er month. After that, the kid will just have to suck it up.

"I understand that once I have used my 2 passes for the ENTIRE month, I will not be able to go to the restroom, get water or go to the nurse," was part of Ms. White's agreement with her students.

Ms. White notes that failure to comply with the pass rules will result in detention. "I understand that Ms. White is petty and although we both have options, I can be denied going to the restroom/water/nurse during the lesson," the agreement concluded.

"As a future teacher, this is horrible and not at all how to manage a classroom. I would be on the phone with the principal immediately and be having a long meeting with this teacher and the principal. She’s not allowed to deny a child water, bathroom breaks or access to the nurse," wrote one person in response to the note.

"I thought this kind of torment had gone away decades ago. When I taught 8th grade, the kids could go as often as they needed. Nobody abused it. (Maybe her students hate her class?)," wrote another person. "I still remember projectile vomiting in 9th grade after being told I couldn't go to the nurse."

Another parent wrote that the policy 'borders on cruel and inhumane'.

Some people had sympathy for Ms. White.

"My god, people. Teacher makes a mistake in handling a situation that is obviously very frustrating for her and you folks are prepared to destroy her," one noted.

"As a former teacher of almost 20 years, I get the teacher’s frustration with a few students who take advantage just to get out of class (most don’t)," said another.

The matter has been brought to the attention of the school officials, who said in a statement on Facebook that the teacher's classroom policy was 'inconsistent with our school’s actual policies, our mission, and our values'.

“Please know the safety and care of our students is always our first priority. It is important that students know we respect them and are responsive to their needs,” the statement said. “To reinforce these values, we convened our full team today to review all relevant policies and procedures. We will continue to work with our teachers and staff to ensure all school policies and values are consistently maintained in each classroom.”
