Student Shares Food With Hungry Student, Turns Out To Be A Big Mistake

Eighth-grader Kyle Bradford wasn’t that hungry so he gave his friend the rest of his chicken burrito. The 13-year-old’s friend was hungry and dissatisfied with the cheese sandwich the school had provided him, and Bradford didn’t want the food to go to waste.

"It seemed like he couldn't get one, a normal lunch, so I just wanted to give mine to him because I really wasn't that hungry,” Bradford said, according to “It was just going to go in the garbage if I didn’t eat it."

He didn’t realize this act of sharing was a punishable offense at his school. Weaverville Elementary School gave him detention, because of their policy that prevents students from exchanging meals to ensure students with food allergies are kept safe.

“Of course if students are concerned about other students not having enough to eat we would definitely want to consider that, but because of safety and liability we cannot allow students to actually exchange meals,” Trinity Alps Unified School District Superintendent Tom Barnett said, according to

Bradford’s mother was not pleased that her son’s act of compassion was being punished.
“By all means the school can teach them math and the arithmetic and physical education, but when it comes to morals and manners and compassion, I believe it needs to start at home with the parent,” Sandy Bradford said.

Bradford said he would share his lunch again if a friend asked him to, CNN reported.
