To Save His Son's Life, Father Engages In Three-Hour Standoff With Police And Doctors

The love of a parent for a child is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. Just ask George Pickering III.

Pickering’s father pulled a gun at a hospital in Houston to force doctors to stop taking his son off life support, and then the young man began to squeeze his hand during the standoff with authorities.

After the hand-squeezing, doctors knew he wasn't brain dead, and began the rehab that led to his near-complete recovery from a massive stroke.

The story begins when the man’s 27-year-old son George III was declared brain dead after suffering a major stroke early this year.

Doctors eventually declared there was no more hope and ordered a 'terminal wean', ie, life support is gradually withdrawn to end life.

Pickering's mom and brother had agreed, and the comatose stroke victim was listed on an organ donation register.

Pickering Sr explained his concerns to local TV station KPRC: “They were moving too fast. The hospital, the nurses, the doctors. I knew if I had three or four hours that night that I would know whether George was brain-dead.”

Pickering threatened hospital staff with the weapon, but after the hand-squeezing occurred, his son was able to get the gun away from him.

Although Pickering says he was drunk and aggressive, he says he felt he had no choice because he knew his son wasn't ready to die.

Once He Knew Son Was Responsive, Father Told Doctors And Surrendered Gun

Pickering's faith that his son would recover never wavered, and after he knew the hospital was not going to pull the plug, he surrendered peacefully.

“During that three hours, George squeezed my hand three or four times on command,” he commented.

The felony charges against Pickering were eventually reduced, and he was released after a few months of incarceration.

His son noted: “There was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons.  I'm here now because of it. It was love, it was love.”
