Random Shooting Kills Beloved High School Football Player in Heroic Act

On Thursday night, in Tennessee, several men went on a shooting spree. The three males, with possible gang ties, fired into a random crowd of teens.

Zaevion Dobson, 15, a high school football player jumped onto three girls to shield them from the gunfire. Lisa Perry, 46, was shot when several rounds were fired into her home. Dobson did not survive the shooting. He was hanging out on a porch with his brothers and friends when a group of men walked up and started shooting. Police say the shooters picked a group at random who were "just hanging out and trying to celebrate the holidays."

Zach Dobson told WBIR-TV "Why would you shoot random bystanders for nothing? We were just sitting there chilling. Zae, he was an awesome kid, awesome brother."

The shootings began around 7 p.m. Lisa Perry, shot in the lower back, is expected to survive. In addition, there was a 10-year-old child in the home who was not hit. Perry's 23-year-old son, Brandon Perry, then drove to Dobson's neighborhood where they "randomly fired multiple times."

Brandon Perry died early Friday morning when he crashed a BMW into an apartment where an "elderly resident" was sleeping inside and was not injured by the accident. Police believe that Perry was shot before his crash.

Christopher Bassett, 20, was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and violation of probation. He is being held without bond.

Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch said, "These cowardly and senseless acts of violence must stop. We should be preparing to celebrate the Christmas holiday, but now we have two men who are dead."

Dobson was a sophomore at Fulton High School in northern Knoxville.
