President Obama Nominates First Muslim Federal Judge

President Barack Obama has taken advantage of a seven-week Congressional recess to make what many are pointing to as a ‘symbolic statement.’ According to the Independent Journal, the President has nominated the first Muslim federal judge.

The President has nominated Abid Riaz Qureshi, a partner in a Washington law firm, to become a federal judge.

“I am pleased to nominate Mr. Qureshi to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident he will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice,” Obama said.

Many have taken this nomination as a shot fired in the direction of Congress, who have been dragging their feet on calling a congressional hearing for the confirmation of a successor to late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Obama’s pick for a successor, Judge Merrick Garland, is unlikely to be clearing his calendar for an appointment hearing anytime soon.

It’s unclear if Qureshi’s nomination will go any further than that, but Muslim advocacy groups are still hailing the commander-in-chief’s nod.

“I commend President Obama for taking this important step in continuing to pick the best and brightest from every community to serve as part of our nation’s judiciary,” shared Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates.
