PR Consultant Claims Trump Helped Prevent Bon Jovi From Buying NFL Team

While every person that has made it to the highest office in the land has brought an interesting resume to the table, President Donald Trump certainly has one of the more conversation-worthy ones. The real estate mogul turned reality television star has been in the spotlight for a couple of decades now, and much of that time was spent in the gossip pages. Trump’s various romantic successes and failures have been a well-documented part of the public record, and the same can be said for a number of his business dealings - including the deals he didn’t make.

Back in 2014, rumors were swirling that Trump was in talks to buy the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League. Trump had long been rumored to have interest in gaining membership to the exclusive fraternity of NFL owners, and he even played a big part in the rival upstart league known as the USFL back in the 1980’s. It seemed like a good fit. And then Jon Bon Jovi got involved.

As the New York Daily News shares, Trump and the rocker were both interested in the Bills at the same time. Trump’s interest eventually waned, but a Buffalo public relations consultant who also worked on Trump's presidential campaign claims that Trump was behind a push to make sure that Buffalo wasn’t all that interested in the crooner either.

Michael Caputo claims that Trump was behind a fan group called 12th Man Thunder, which pulled together a petition in opposition to the singer buying the team. The gist was that Jon Bon Jovi was rumored to be interested in moving the team to Canada, and the city’s longtime diehard fans weren’t about to stand for that. It’s unclear if that’s what really would’ve happened if the star was successful in his bid.

”Mr. Trump was convinced that the community wouldn’t stand for a move,” he said. ”So he sent me off to try to organize something with local fans to get that rolling.”

It was quite the effort regardless of who was behind it, as “Bon Jovi Free Zone” posters were all over the place, and local radio stations received pressure to stop playing the star's music. Terry and Kim Pegula, owners of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, would go on to buy the team later that year for a cool $1.4 billion, and that would eventually prompt a response from Trump.

“Even though I refused to pay a ridiculous price for the Buffalo Bills, I would have produced a winner. Now that won’t happen,” Trump wrote. “The people of Buffalo should be happy Terry Pegula got the team but I hope he does better w/the Bills than he has w/the Sabres. Good luck! The @nfl games are so boring now that actually, I’m glad I didn’t get the Bills. Boring games, too many flags, too soft!”

It’s unclear if Trump’s alleged efforts directly led to Jon Bon Jovi being kicked to the curb in this scenario, but it’s yet another fascinating aside to the Trump story regardless. It also offers up some new perspective on the term ‘fake news,’ but that’s another story for another day.
