Participant Dies During Krispy Kreme Challenge

Jeff Woods, 58, decided to take part in the annual Krispy Kreme Challenge in North Carolina yesterday. The five-mile challenge has runners run 2.5 miles to a Krispy Kreme Shop. Contestants have to then eat 12 donuts before running back to the starting point.

Jeff "Fafa" woods started complaining of chest pains around the first mile of the five-mile race. He stepped out of the race and was transported by EMS to Rex Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The challenge's Twitter page wrote, "We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones." Woods had died of a heart attack.

His friends described him as kind and fun. They also shared that he didn't run regularly, so they were surprised when he signed up for the Krispy Kreme Challenge.

The challenge is held by North Carolina State University to benefit the North Carolina Children's Hospital. It is now in its 12th year.
