'Operation Stampede' Just Smashed This Massive Food Stamp Fraud Operation

A highly publicized Food Stamp Scandal, was recently exposed by a police operation, entitled ‘Operation Stampede’ in March, 2017. The operation has seen 22 people charged with fraud after the discovery of more than $13 million worth of fraudulent food stamp transactions, conducted through various small greengrocers and supermarkets.

It is no secret that within the welfare system, there are some who see fit to abuse the benefits given to them by the government. Stores and vendors mostly situated in Opa-locka Hialeah Flea Market, Palm Beach Miami, Florida, were discovered to have been abusing the ‘Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program’ or SNAP cards, using them to give cash to recipients and taking a cut for themselves. Operation Stampede, conducted by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, State and Federal law enforcement, found numerous counts of identity theft, wire fraud and food stamp/Electronic Benefit Transfer fraud with several shop vendors facing up to 25 years in prison. Owners of a produce market within Opa-locka, Karla Rodriquez Diaz and Luis Marzo Machado, abused their permission to accept food stamps and began to use the food stamps to make extra money, cheating the government of $2.4 million. This case was only one of 15 discovered in the initial stages of the operation.

An unnamed Southern District of Florida Attorney has expressed their outrage over the blatant abuse of what is meant to be an honest, helpful system: “These retailers are flagrantly abusing the public trust by stealing millions of dollars from the federal food stamp program that is intended to provide low-income households with their needed basic provisions of food and nutrition…”. Dubbed the largest food stamp fraud bust in U.S. history, Mr. Jack Heacock, a director of the Florida Division of Public Assistance Fraud, has revealed that the SNAP fraud operation runs much deeper than they anticipated, predicting that the arrests of the 23 people were only just the beginning. It is believed that individuals who used their SNAP cards in exchange for money, will also be sanctioned.
