Officers Arrest Grandma After Discovering Sick Thing She Did To Little Girl

Police followed a tip about a girl being abused, but they weren't prepared for what they found. They learned that the little girl was kept in a dog kennel cage whenever she was home. Her grandmother says she did it for the girl's own good.

The victim lived with her grandmother, 46-year-old Gail Lalonde, and her grandmother's 48-year-old boyfriend, Dale Deavers. The girl went to school one day with short hair, and teachers asked what happened. The girl told them that her grandmother cut the hair off as a punishment. Teachers at her elementary school reported possible abuse, and the Racine County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin went to investigate.

Officers found that the young victim was kept in the 10-by-4-foot cage when she was home during the day, as well as overnight. There was a cardboard box inside serving as a makeshift bed, and blankets strewn about. There were no dogs in the home.

“During the investigation, it was learned that a 9-year-old juvenile was being held in a dog kennel at night and occasionally throughout the day at her residence located in the Town of Norway,” read the official press release from the police. “Additionally, it was learned that the dog kennel was padlocked to prevent the child from escaping.”

Officers also found Lalonde and Deavers were operating a drug trafficking business out of their home. Officers report they found gardening supplies such as grow lights, and 23 marijuana plants inside.

"I have not seen anything like this in my 23 years of law enforcement experience," Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said. "I've seen people do horrific things to other human beings, but I've never seen anyone treat a child like an animal."

“I was sickened at what I witnessed last night... It doesn’t get much worse than this," said Schmaling.

Lalonde and Deavers admitted that they kept the girl locked up in a cage, but they said that it was for the girl's own welfare. The grandmother reported that the little girl would eat cleaning products. She also says the child 'threatens to kill us'.

Police released a heartbreaking photo of the cage where the girl was allegedly imprisoned. "You've seen the photo. Cardboard on the floor, a couple of blankets and a padlock,” said Schmaling. "I wouldn't treat my own dog that way.”

Lalonde and Deavers were arrested and each are being held on $55,000 bail. The couple is facing felony charges of causing mental harm to a child, false imprisonment, as well as several other offenses.

Another child, the victim's sibling, also reportedly lived on the premises, but as of now there has been no other information reported about the second child. Both children have been removed and are currently in the care of Racine County Human Services.
There is currently no word on the parents or where they might have been while their daughter was kept caged by the grandmother and her boyfriend.
