Officer Comes Under Fire Over What He Did To Pregnant Woman

Pregnant women tend to be treated differently than others, especially when it comes to doing anything that might potentially harm their unborn child. Unfortunately, one police officer seems to have missed that important memo.

The Pass Christian Police Department is under fire after a witness spoke out about the conduct of one of its officers during an arrest. The incident occurred when an unnamed Pass Christian police officer pulled over Aviana White, a pregnant 27-year-old woman from Mississippi, and her brother, 21-year-old Miles Spears, and accused them of speeding.

In an interview with the Sun Herald, Tim Hendricks, the chief of police at the Pass Christian Police Department, asserted that the unidentified officer behaved cordially while he asked Ms. White and Mr. Spears for their license and legal name. However, when Ms. White refused to comply with the cop’s demands, the officer’s demeanor instantly darkened. According to New York Daily News, Ms. White was not willing to supply the police officer with her identity information because she believed that there was no legal requirement for her to do so.

As the officer walked back to his patrol car, Ms. White and Mr. Spears exited their vehicle. Unsurprisingly, the unnamed police officer was threatened by this action and demanded that the siblings return to their vehicle. When Ms. White and Mr. Spears continued to refuse, the Pass Christian police officer arrested both of them and filed failure to comply and disorderly conduct charges.

Alicia Burton was on hand to witness and record what happened next. When Ms. White took out her mobile phone to complain about her treatment, the Pass Christian officer “charged” at her and aimed a stun gun at the 27-year-old woman. It was at this moment that Ms. White frantically yelled “I’m pregnant” in an attempt to defuse the situation. Mr. Burton and Mr. Spears also tried to prevent the arresting officer from using his stun gun, screaming: “Don’t tase her, she’s pregnant!”

But the officer wasn’t listening and, according to Mr. Burton, began “Tasing that girl all over her body.” The Sun Herald reports that Ms. White was stunned twice on her upper body and once on her abdomen. As other officers arrived on the scene, Ms. White was quickly taken to a nearby hospital. Luckily, Ms. White only suffered minor bruises and the stun gun did not affect the innocent fetus.

After processing her identification documents, Pass Christian police officer learnt that Ms. White had a criminal record and was flagged for a (2014) outstanding misdemeanor domestic violence warrant in Long Beach. When police officers searched the sibling’s vehicle, they discovered drug paraphernalia and firearm equipment.

After she checked out of the hospital, Ms. White – who was also charged with assaulting a police officer – was arrested and remains detained in Harrison County Jail. Chief Hendricks is adamant that his officers behaved appropriately during the incident, telling the Sun Herald: “She was very defiant with the officer, and that’s what led up to this. The officer asked her repeatedly to stay in the car and she refused to do that. I think the charges are justified.”

However, Mr. Burton disputes this claim, emphasizing that: “[This] was a situation that escalated that didn’t have to escalate the way it did.”
