Muslim Man Ejected From Flight For Speaking Arabic

A Southwest Airlines employee allegedly kicked a man off a plane earlier this month when another passenger complained that he was speaking Arabic.

Khairuldeen Makhzoomi, a University of California student, said he was talking on the phone with his uncle. He told The Huffington Post that he noticed the other passenger watching him and thought, “I hope she’s not reporting me.”

According to the news site, the 26-year-old political science major is a refugee from Iraq, where Saddam Hussein’s government murdered his father in 2002. Mazhzoomi had taken his seat for a flight from Los Angeles to Oakland on April 6, when the airline worker led him off the plane.

Airport security personnel and FBI agents interrogated the Muslim student, asking about the phone call and the contents of his luggage. The officers searched his crotch, suggesting he might be hiding a knife, onlookers reported. “At that moment, it was the maximum point of humiliation,” Mazhzoomi said. “My eyes began to water.”

One of the cops informed the student that the passenger had accused him of uttering the word “shahid,” Arabic for “martyr.” Makhzoomi claimed he said “inshallah,” which means “if God is willing.” When a Southwest travel agent advised him to apologize, he responded: “My dignity comes first. I will just get my refund and leave.”

Makhzoomi, who is seeking a public apology from the airline, declared: “I only hate one thing in my life, Islamic State. We should challenge terrorism not with ignorance but with education and knowledge.”
