Mother Notices Something Strange About Baby During Her Ultrasound - Immediately Aborts

A woman from China was six months pregnant when an ultrasound revealed some news that disturbed her. Instead of continuing with the pregnancy, the woman opted for an abortion.

The 23-year-old mother, known only as Wu, went for a standard ultrasound and learned that her daughter suffered from sirenomelia. Also known as 'Mermaid Syndrome,' sirenomelia is an extremely rare condition in which the fetus's legs are fused together to form what looks like a mermaid tail.

Doctors also revealed to Wu that her baby didn't have a bladder and had a stunted liver. The baby was only likely to survive a few hours after birth. Wu made the tough decision to terminate the pregnancy there and then.

Shiloh Pepin is one of the most famous sufferers of sirenomelia. She was born and nicknamed by the press the 'Mermaid Girl.' Over her short lifetime, she had to have more than 150 surgeries. She died at age 10.
