Message On Public School Teachers' New T-Shirts Send Parents Over The Edge

Teachers at John Muir Elementary in Seattle were planning a classroom demonstration. The faculty planned to all wear 'Black Lives Matter' t-shirts for the day in hopes of sparking a dialogue about race.

Teachers felt the responsibility to bring up the current racial tensions with students in school. “To be silent would be almost unforgiveable, and I think we have been silent for almost too long,” said Marjorie Lamarre.

The school planned to talk to kids about why they think people of color are dealing with higher incarceration rates and lower graduation rates than white people. According to one teacher, the problem is all 'part of the oppression, the systemic oppression.'

Teachers were prepared to face criticism for the decision, given how controversial the BLM movement is. “I think we are going to get some pushback from the t-shirts, but I think that is an invitation for families in the community that might not agree with us to come in and have a discussion with us,” said teacher JR Lorca.

In the long run, the school cancelled the plans for their demonstration. "Due to actions outside of the SPS community, including a potential security threat to our students, we are canceling the Black Men Uniting to Change the Narrative celebration..." said a statement put out by the district.
