Medical Services Provider Employee At Center Of ID Theft And Tax Fraud Ring

Data breaches have become far too common in our digital society, and they typically are the result of an outside attack by hackers. Once in a while, the data breaches are caused by someone on the inside with access to sensitive information. According to the Sun Sentinel, the latter is exactly what happened in this case, leading to a complicated web of theft and fraud.

Latonya Ware, a 27-year old Florida resident, was employed by a medical services provider. Somewhere in the course of duty, she decided that she could put the personal information of patients to better use. This idea struck a chord with several others as well, and six people in total have been connected to an identity theft and tax fraud ring that netted the group quite a haul – until they got caught.

The group submitted fraudulent tax returns that generated refunds of more than $147,000, and also had themselves a little shopping spree, courtesy of the newfound personal information. In total, the group would rack up more than $49,000 in unauthorized debit and credit card purchases.

Alas, the paper trail would lead the authorities back to Latonya and her co-conspirators. Five of the six have been sentenced to between three and six years behind bars, while a sixth suspect remains at large.
