Mass Shooting In California Gets Little Coverage - Here's Why

Two police officers were killed and one was wounded in a shooting in Palm Springs on Saturday. The suspect has been taken into custody after a grueling 12-hour stand-off.

John Felix, 27, was arrested after allegedly opening fire on police officers from his house. The call started earlier that day as a domestic dispute. Officers went to investigate when Felix's mother called to complain that her son was causing a disturbance.

When four officers arrived at the family home around noon, Felix allegedly said to his father that he wanted to kill the cops. He then fired right through his door, hitting three of the officers. Witnesses report hearing more than 100 shots erupt.

One victim, Officer Jose Gilbert Vega, 63, had been on the force for 35 years and was planning to retire in December. He was a married father of eight.

Another victim, Officer Lesley Zerebny, 27, had been an officer for 18 months. She had just returned to work after a four-month long maternity leave.

According to reports, Felix has a long history of run-ins with the law, including spending four years in prison after attempted murder in 2009. He confessed to assault with a firearm for that crime. He was also arrested in 2013 for fighting with police on the same doorstep where the incident occurred on Saturday.
