Man's Dying Wish Granted By Heroic Firefighters Just By Doing This One Simple Thing

Nurse Leigh Gardner of Evergreen Health Hospice in Washington cares deeply about her hospice patients, so when Edward Reis told her what one of his final wishes were she knew she had to try and make it come true.

According to Little Things, the Snohomish County Fire District were more than willing to help out. Reis’ final wish was to go outside and enjoy Mother Nature one last time. Reis was an outdoorsman and a forest ranger before he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2008 which left him bedridden.

As Gardner describes it, Reis was a “gentle, gentle soul.”

The firefighters came to Evergreen Hospice to pick up Reis in their fire truck and take him on a three-hour outdoor excursion in Meadowdale Beach Park in Edmonds, WA. Firefighters and hospice volunteers helped Reis up and down the trails so he could enjoy the fresh air, singing birds and smell and touch the flowers. Reis wasn’t able to speak much but they knew he was happy in nature.

“That made it all worthwhile,” firefighter and paramedic Shane Cooper said. “That’s a highlight of my career. I’ve been here for 25 years, and that’ll stay one of the highlights.”

While Reis was being given a gift he was actually giving a gift those around him.
