Man Told His Garage Is No Longer His

A resident of Westland, MI that was diligent about making his mortgage and tax payments received a pretty big surprise when his neighbor alerted him to a foreclosure notice hanging on his garage. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the man’s garage would end up being auctioned off.

Aaron Dehetre purchased his home about seven years ago. And recently received a curious phone call from a neighbor.

"My neighbor called me and said there was a foreclosure notice on my door. I had a foreclosure notice on the garage door. I started calling my bank, the city, the county," he said.

Turns out that the garage wasn’t included in the survey for his purchase of the home, and the garage was actually owned by someone else. The garage would end up selling at a county auction for $1,500, and despite his best efforts, there was nothing Dehetre could do about it.

"When you purchase something, know what you are purchasing. In this situation he didn't get a staked survey done to tell him exactly what he is getting," warns Wayne County Treasurer David Szymanski.
