Man Convicted Of Murdering Girl By Stepping On Her Chest

Californian Daniel Ruiz was found guilty of second-degree murder and assault on a child causing death, on Thursday last week in a San Bernardino County courtroom.

Ruiz came home from work in late August of 2013, but found out his girlfriend was not home. He found her with a female friend at a nearby apartment, and the women said they were making a run to the local store to buy milk, and for Ruiz to babysit the two kids.

They were only gone maybe 30 to 45 minutes, and while they were gone, Ruiz walked over to a 1-year-old girl named Scarlett lying on the floor on a pillow in front of a TV.

Prosecutors said: “He then placed his left foot on her chest, applying most of his 230 pounds of weight on her body. Scarlett began gasping for breath.”

Ruiz then lifted up his foot, walked over to the television. When he looked over a few minutes later, he saw that Scarlett had begun to suffer from a seizure.

Just a minute or so later, Ruiz heard the mother returning home and ran outside to tell her that the child had to go to the emergency room. When they couldn’t get through to 911, the woman took Scarlett in her arms and ran to a nearby fire station.
