Mailwoman Thought Something Was Amiss With Elderly Woman - She Was Right On The Money

When you do your job for a long enough period of time, it’s common to be able to quickly sense when things don’t seem right. Listening to those instincts can lead to some serious problems being avoided - in more ways than one.

Staten Island mailwoman Lisa Sweeney came across one of those situations while going through her route, and she decided to act on the feeling that she had. It’s a good thing she did, because she wound up saving a woman’s life.

As New Ravel shares, Sweeney was concerned about an elderly woman that was along her route, as her mail kept piling up.

“I’m just aware of everything,” she explained. “It’s a very quiet, quaint area that I deliver the mail. So anything out of the ordinary, a light bulb goes off in my head.”

The light bulb that went off stuck with her, and she just couldn’t shake the feeling.

“I’m aware of my surroundings always,” she added. “The garbage gets picked up Friday. Her garbage pails were still out in the driveway [on the Monday]. That was a signal.”

She decided to call for some help to get a wellness check on 87-year-old Marie Boyer, and it’s a good thing that she did. The woman had fallen and injured herself, and she was unable to contact any help.

“When I fell to the ground, I couldn’t get up again. Because I had a lot of damage to my body before, and it made it difficult. The windows were closed, and I kept on calling out and telling people to call 911. But nobody could hear me,” Boyer explains. “So that went on for like three days. That’s when I was getting dehydrated. I didn’t want to die that way. I don’t think anybody would want to die in that kind of circumstance.”

Beyond calling for help, Sweeney stuck around to make sure everything was ok. She was fearing the worst, but she was able to soon breathe a sigh of relief.

“When someone finally came down and said, ‘She’s alive,’ I started crying,” the 51-year-old explained. “I was just happy she was alive.”

Boyer was able to get the help that she needed, and she’s doing just fine. She’s moved to a senior living community, and a friendship has sparked between the pair.

“I knew you’d know I was in the house because the mail was all there,” Boyer said during a recent visit with Sweeney. “If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be here right now.”

If Sweeney didn’t act on her instincts, there’s no telling what would’ve happened. Thankfully, this tale has a happy ending, and Boyer wound up with a new friend to visit with to boot.

“I think she’s very special,” Boyer added. “I don’t think she just thinks about herself. She thinks about others.”

Hats off to Sweeney for listening to her gut, and we can all use this as further confirmation that we should do the same when we get one of those nagging feelings.
