Kelly Clarkson Fights Back Tears While Singing Song About Her Dad

It's the end of an era, with American Idol's last season coming to a close. The first Idol winner showed up for a final appearance on the show and couldn't hold back the emotion.

Maybe it was nostalgia, maybe it was the pregnancy hormones, but Kelly Clarkson had a hard time holding it together during her Idol performance. During the performance, she wiped back the tears threatening to fall. A couple of times her voice cracked and she had to stop and take a breath to get herself together.

Clarkson owes her fame to American Idol; she soared to stardom after being named the winner of the first season. Her emotion in this last performance is reminiscent of her emotion in her final performance after she was just announced the winner.

The 33-year-old sang a ballad she wrote herself when pregnant with her first child, and that also helped push her over the edge. Clarkson was very pregnant with her second child during the performance in which she compares her husband, a loving father, to her own father who walked out on her family.

The judges were also moved by the display of emotion. Keith Urban also let the tears roll down his cheeks. “The song is insane,” he later told Entertainment Tonight. “I mean, I figure you’re either crying at this performance or you need to check your pulse.”
