Husband's Bad Judgement Lands Oklahoma Mayor In Hot Seat

On Halloween night, Lahoma Mayor Theresa Sharp's husband, Cary Sharp, and several other men wore white robes and hoods while holding a cross in front of a fire to make it appear it was burning. It was intended to be a prank, but that didn't work out too well when an image was posted on social media.

The photo shows four men dressed in white robes and hoods standing in front of a cross while holding flaming torches in front of it. Theresa Sharp told the Enid News and Eagle that she was out trick-or-treating with her son at the time of the incident and that she “in no way supports the activities that occurred.”

Cary Sharp explained that they came up with the idea when they decided to "Sit around the bonfire and drink a couple of beers and thought well my buddy his last name is White and the subject got brung (sic) up. We just thought it'd be something to do and it's not something to do. I am embarrassed. I've shamed my family and friends and I apologize for that.”

Mayor Sharp said, “I just don't condone it regardless of who it is whether it's my husband or Joe Smith around the corner. It's not anything that I think needs to be represented for our community at all.”

Misty Meister reported the incident on Saturday just before 10.30pm, and she told police that several people were dressed as KKK members and were burning a cross. Garfield County Sheriff Jerry Niles said that no law was broken, but the prank was “very poor judgment.”

Deputies tried to explain to Meister that while the actions were in poor taste, “the Constitution protects freedom of speech and that we can't make them stop.” That made her even more angry. Cary and his friends were not arrested.
