High School Students Need Police Protection After Spelling Out Slur

Phoenix police were called to Tempe Union High School District after students wear shirts that spelled out the racial slur, "ni**er." They were supposed to spell out "best you've ever seen 2016." Instead, they went off on their own to spell out the racial slur.

When the photo emerged online, police were called to keep the peace as many were outraged. Tempe Union High School District spokeswoman Jill Hanks said on Friday that their is an ongoing discipline process.

In addition, the six girls were punished in accordance with district policies. This was supposed to be for a senior class photo. Hanks went on to say that officials are "absolutely outraged an disappointed" and the students' actions do not represent the student body.

Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio said the Phoenix Police department told him that the girls have been threatened. He stated "They made a bad mistake as many teenagers do in life. But, any threats against these young women is going to be taken very seriously...People just need to knock off the threats and leave this to school officials and their parents. Period."

In addition, Tempe Union Superintendent Kenneth Baca said, "It is unacceptable for any racial slur to be used regardless of intent. We need to understand that words matter. I can assure you the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken."
