Here's Why You Shouldn't Wear Crocs

Crocs have been a summer staple for almost 15 years now, but they might be harming your feet. Podiatrists are warning patients to limit the amount of time they spend in Crocs.

Crocs were originally made for boaters. The water-proof foam resin is lightweight, comfortable and waterproof. They caught on like wildfire. As they became available in more colors, and as a slew of knock-off brands came out, you could find people who practically lived in Crocks.

Crocs manufacturers have even gone as far as to market their product as 'therapeutic,' claiming it helps with achy feet, bunions and even that they're good for diabetics.

Some foot doctors are skeptical about those claims. They say Crocks are not a healthy footwear choice.

“Patients are more likely to have foot pain if their shoes bend in the shank,” says Dr. Alex Kor, President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. “I see patients who come into my office complaining of arch or heel pain and they are wearing Crocs.”

“Unfortunately, Crocs are not suitable for all-day use,” says podiatrist Dr. Megan Leahy. “These shoes do not adequately secure the heel. When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip, which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns and calluses. The same thing can happen with flip-flops or any backless shoes, as the heel is not secured.”

If you've been having foot problems, you might want to ditch the Crocs. They could be making things worse.
