Here’s The Reason Why President Trump Could Be Impeached

President Donald J. Trump was sworn into office on Friday, and by Monday he had been hit with his first major lawsuit. A liberal-leaning citizens group is challenging the president on conflicts of interest due to his vast business empire.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a legal watchdog group, are suing President Trump because they believe the businesses he owns violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. The clause was added by the founding fathers, who were wisely concerned about leaders taking advantage of their office to further their business interests.

President Trump has already said he has resigned as CEO of Trump Organization. His sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., as well as a veteran corporate executive, are taking over the business. Trump has even gone so far as to swear to never talk business with his sons again.

Ethics are still a concern to many, particularly those who do not support or trust President Trump. While the Emoluments Clause does not claim presidents may not own businesses while in office (indeed, many have), they fear Trumps empire is too international for him to assure no conflicts will arise.

CREW has suggested the president fully divest from his business interests, or place his company under independent management in a trust until his terms end.
