Appropriately Dressed Girl Booted From Prom, Dads Couldn't Stop Ogling (PHOTO)

Every now and then we see a story in the news about girls getting sent home from school because of their attire. Some schools have banned girls from wearing leggings while others have banned tank tops.

One of the main reasons the schools give for their dress code choices is that girls in tight, or revealing clothing distract boys from their schoolwork. Not only is this ridiculous as there is no scientific evidence that boys are more likely to be aroused than girls, but it is extremely sexist.

It perpetuates the idea that boys have no self control and girls are supposed to be extra careful. Some criticizers say it even contributes to date-rape culture because this ideology that a girl must hide her body to be respected is introduced at such a young, developmental age.

Clare Ettinger was one of those girls sent home when she turned up at a school prom in a so-called "revealing" dress. Being home-schooled, this was one of the few times that Claire was able to be in a social setting with kids her age. While she was dancing with all her friends, she noticed middle-aged male chaperones intensely staring at her. The staring continued and the dads created a scene.

Instead of speaking to the dads at the dance, the school administration asked Clare to leave. She posted on social media, “Like a good little homeschooler. I made sure that the dress was fingertip length on me; I even tried it on with my shoes, just to be sure. I was told that the way I dressed and moved my body was causing men to think inappropriately about me, implying that it is my responsibility to control other people’s thoughts and drives."

"Enough with the slut shaming. Please. Goddamn I’m not responsible for some perverted 45-year-old dad lusting after me because I have a sparkly dress on and a big ass for a teenager. And if you think I am, then maybe you’re part of the problem"

This is a part of a larger problem in our society that must be addressed. Women should not have to apologize for having curves, nor should they have to hide their bodies in fear or being ogled or raped.
