Off-Duty Officer Charged for Fleeing the Scene of an Accident

Jonathan Morales, 30, of Long Island, was arrested Tuesday after it was discovered that the off-duty NYPD officer rear-ended another car in Astoria and then walked away from the scene. This was despite having blood still on his face from the crash.

According to prosecutors, Morales was driving an Audi A7 and rear-ended a black Lincoln MKV parked on 31st Ave. A 40-year-old man was sitting in the Lincoln’s driver’s seat. He flew forward, slamming his head into the steering wheel.

Although Morales got out of his car and stepped away from the scene. He never bothered to speak with the injured victim. The 40-year-old man’s forehead was scraped and swollen, and he suffered head and back pain. The next day, Morales filed an insurance claim.

Kevin Ryan, a spokesman for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said, “He did report it to his insurance company. He didn’t report it to the police." Morales has been charged with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident.
