Dollar Store Play Make-Up Kit Sends 3-Year-Old to Hospital

A little girl went to the dollar store with her parents and they picked up a 'toy' make-up set for her. When she got home she began playing with her new toy, but things went horribly wrong.

The girl's skin began erupting in painful blisters shortly after she applied the products. She was rushed to the hospital and is still recovering three weeks later.

Lydia Craves is a 3-year-old girl from Illinois who had to be admitted into the hospital earlier this month. The little girl appeared to have a severe allergic reaction to 'play' make-up from a dollar store.

Her parents, Tony and Kylie, were shocked by how bad it got.

The mom and dad said that it took less than 24 hours for their daughter's face to become 'swollen and blistered shut' after using the make-up. She suffered from rashes all over her body, and because her lips were so cracked, she was unable to eat because of the pain.

“We never imagined after spending the day applying to her eyes and lips that our worst nightmare would come true,” the parents said on a Facebook post.

According to Mr. and Mrs. Craves, the make-up was labeled non-toxic, so they thought it would be harmless. It was being sold to children for play time at the local Family Dollar store, so they never imagined that such a reaction could happen.

“My heart is heavy. This has been horrible,” the mom told People.

“When she first began reacting, she had severe swelling of the eyes and face. She was very uncomfortable. The only thing we are worried about is Lydia and her getting better right now. Nothing else is important.”

According to a spokesperson for the Family Dollar, the family hasn't contacted them yet. They learned about the incident from the news.

“We have not heard from the family directly but are aware of the media reports and are pleased to hear that Lydia is recovering from her allergic reaction," said spokesperson Randy Guiler.

"In 2016, we purchased a supplier’s product matching the photo in social media. In accordance with our procedures, our supplier’s product had been independently tested for toxic chemicals."

"Upon being made aware of this incident, we re-confirmed that test results showed that no toxic chemicals were found in these make-up kits. We have received no other complaints or claims of allergic reactions related to this product.”

Photos of Lydia are heartbreaking and it's clear the little girl must have suffered a great deal from the allergic reaction. Thankfully, after three weeks, she appears to be healing and is in much better spirits.

She's been released from the hospital but is still under medical care.

“It’s so hard to put into words,” Kylie said to People.

“Lydia is my everything. Every day my heart is filled with more joy, more strength.... My baby is not 100 percent at this point. She is improving every day and we are grateful and we pray that she continues to improve."

“She is just ready to get back to being Lydia," she adds.

The parents of five are now warning others through social media about how important it is for parents to educate themselves on ingredients in products children play with before handing them over to the kids.

"I'm making this post because I feel like it is very important to remind parents to be very careful about what we allow our children to have… For Tony and I this was definitely an eye opener and we will be more cautious about acknowledging ingredients and educating ourselves on what is good and bad before purchasing from here on out," read a post.
