Dog Owner Facing Criminal Charges After Controversial Facebook Post

On Friday, Katharine F. Lemansky -- known on Facebook as Katie Brown, posted a despicable photo of her dog with its mouth taped shut.

She now faces a fine, one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty and up to 150 days in jail. The image and caption quickly spread online receiving a lot of public outrage. Lemansky and her dog were in Cary, North Carolina where she's facing criminal penalties.

Cary Police Captain Randall Rhyne said in a statement “Taping the dog’s muzzle shut was a terrible decision on Ms. Lemansky’s part, and charging her with animal cruelty under North Carolina law was the right thing to do."

Animal control officers examined the dog from the photo, and another in the same home. Both were found to be healthy and well-cared for.

Rhyne added that's why they could not remove the dog from Lemansky's care. He shared that there was "not even detectable hair loss." Lemansky is due to appear in court on Dec. 14.
