Doctor In Training Gives Her Life To Save Another

Samantha Agins, 22, had dreams of becoming a physician. Being in her senior year at a college in Pennsylvania and working as a young medic at a camp for disabled people, she was well on her way in pursuit of this dream.

Last Friday, in New Jersey, where Camp Jaycee is located, Samantha spent half an hour conducting CPR on an autistic woman who had gone into cardiac arrest.

Her family told NBC News that shortly after, Samantha showed signs of being in shock. Her father, Bruce Agins told the news team that Samantha threw up and was as "white as a ghost,"

Her mother was on her way to the camp in order to take Samantha home, but upon her arrival Samantha was no longer responding.

She was rushed to Pocono Medical Center where doctors discovered that she had torn an artery. The doctors said this was probably already weakened, but tore when she attempted to resuscitate her first patient. This led to Samantha suffering several strokes and caused damage to her brain stem. Doctors told the family that nothing could be done to save her life.

Samantha was being kept alive through life support, her family then had to make a decision that would have been impossible with how much they valued their daughters life, they had to take her off life support. Her father said that he takes some small comfort in knowing that she was doing what she wanted to do in life, trying to save lives.
