Disabled Army Veteran Gets Robbed Right Before the Holidays

Army SSG Alex Jauregui had served two tours in Iraq and two tours In Afghanistan. His career came to an end when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Sangsar, Afghanistan. He “lost both legs, suffered significant hearing loss in both ears, and sustained extensive injuries to his right hand and forearm."

To thank Alex for his service, Homes for Our Troops constructed a house in Woodland, California that was made to adapt to his condition. Yet, on December 16, thieves broke into his home and stole around $85,000 in valuables. Alex's insurance company will only cover under one-third of what was taken.

Alex told CBS Sacramento "They tried to kick the door in so they ended up prying it open." The burglars stole televisions, computers, weapons, a safe full of cash and a Segway donated to Alex that he used to get around.

Alex’s neighbor, Spencer Defty, said, “A guy like him goes and does what he does for our country and gives it all and then some people come and do this sort of thing." Yet, it's his pictures of his colleagues in combat that he will miss the most.

Alex said “Eleven years worth of military life — I had deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and those friends have been killed. That’s the only stuff I got of them and now that stuff is gone."

Now, Alex and his family have to forgo Christmas spending in order to replace their necessities. Patriots for Veterans has set up a GoFundMe page to help Alex and his family recover from this selfish act of thievery.
