Did You Know E-Cigarettes Can Cause Popcorn Lung? Here Are The Symptoms

The vapor from e-cigarettes is often touted as safer than the smoke from cigarettes, but a new Harvard study links the flavorings used in the vaporized nicotine devices to a disease called obliterative bronchiolitis, or popcorn lung. Other studies have also shown that flavorings can cause this serious disease.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health helped lead an investigation into ex- microwaveable popcorn factory workers getting sick with the severe form of bronchitis around 15 years ago. The investigation definitively connected the occupational exposure to the debilitating disease.

Those suffering from obliterative bronchiolitis have shortness of breath, wheezing, fatigue and night sweats, and other symptoms. It's irreversible and may be life-threatening in severe cases.

The new study connecting e-cigarettes to popcorn lung was managed by the Harvard School of Public Health, and the data showed that electronic cigarette vapor contained at least one of the three most toxic chemicals in 47 of the 51 brands studied.

There were also other disturbing findings in the study. The readings of one of the toxic chemicals (diacetyl, commonly used in both fruity and popcorn flavorings) was so high in 39 of the e-cigarettes that the concentration was above the range of detection of the lab equipment.
