Denny’s Manager Mocks Choking Elderly Customer

It’s not easy getting old, and sometimes older people are very slow at even the most basic tasks, including eating a meal. You might think that a long-term manager at a busy Denny’s diner in suburban Minnesota would understand that it’s inappropriate to mock an elderly person who is eating very slowly and having difficulty swallowing her food, but apparently not.

Multiple media sources are reporting that Bob Quigley, the manager of a Denny's restaurant in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, put the words “Add $15 for Life Alert button" at the bottom of an elderly woman's receipt on Monday.

The heartless act was at first passed off as a joke, but after a social media firestorm erupted, Quigley called the daughter of the elderly woman to apologize. Denny’s management also got involved, with the owner of the Denny's telling the daughter Quigley was getting a write-up and retraining, but would not be fired due to his longtime employment with the company. The family was offered reimbursement for their Monday afternoon visit, as well as a free meal the next time they came to the restaurant.

“Blatant Age Discrimination”

According to the woman’s daughter Caroline Speikers, the whole affair smacks of age discrimination: "Either he's mocking someone who is ill and disabled, or he's totally comfortable discriminating against someone's age," Speikers noted. "He has a sick and twisted sense of humor, and should not be allowed around customers."
