Delaware Waitress Helps Find Runaway Teen Girls

A six-month pregnant waitress in Delaware is being hailed as a hero for helping locate two missing teenage girls, but she says it was just the right thing to do.

When Lisa Stephenson, a server at the Blue Crab Grill in Newark, Del., noticed two teenage girls come in and apply for jobs, she immediately became suspicious. They did not provide home addresses or cell phone numbers on their applications and they looked a bit scruffy, she noted.

The two girls said that their phones and money had been stolen in New York, and they had just come down to Delaware.

Stephenson worried what could happen to two young girls out on the road by themselves. “They were in sweats and it looked like they hadn’t touched their hair in a while,” said Stephenson. “I immediately had a feeling they were runaways.”

Waitress Decided She Had To Help

She told herself she would want someone to help if her daughter had run away.

Stephenson decided to search on Facebook for their names, and she found one of the girls was a 16-year-old girl from Brunswick, Maine. The girl’s mom had put up a missing persons notice about her daughter and a 14-year-old friend who had both disappeared back on October 25th when they didn’t turn up for a babysitting job.

She sent the girl’s mom a friend request, and then told her she had met the girls. Stephenson then asked her cousins, local police deputies, to help, and they located them panhandling in front of a clothing store on November 3.

It turned out that the girls had stolen one of their mother’s cars and had driven “straight through Boston, New York, and some of the most scary places they could have been,” the mom of the older girl said. They both made it home safely, but are grounded for quite some time.
