Customer Makes Disgusting Find In Trader Joe Kale Package

There's nothing like farm-fresh vegetables for a health diet, and everyone knows farms are full of little critters. It's not a huge surprise when you pick your own veggies or buy them freshly picked from a produce stand to find an insect or other small creature mixed in with the produce.

However, when you purchase a package of produce that claims to be clean, you expect higher standards. One woman found something disgusting in her bag of kal, and she's completely grossed out.

Grace Goldstein usually loves shopping at Trader Joes, and is unapologetic about it. After her recent find, however, she doesn't know if she has the stomach to go back. If she does, she's going to be very vigilant about the packages she picks up.

Goldstein picked up a bag of kale in the produce department of the supermarket, but when she got it home she noticed the contents were more than she bargained for. There was a dead lizard mixed in with the kale inside the clear bag.

The shopper felt like she was going to puke. She snapped a photo and shared it with a friend. Kate Berner was disgusted and shared the photo on social media.

"I’m the number 1 #traderjoes apologist, but this lizard in my friend’s kale isn’t great," read her tweet.

The photo went viral, and the lizard corpse has gotten some strong reactions.

"Omgggggggggg. I can’t unsee this," one person responded.

"It was a back and forth between denial and horror, which amounted to a lot of asking my boyfriend to see the bag of kale and identify the lizard and shrieking and pushing it away and refusing to go near it... and then asking to see it again," said Goldstein to People magazine.

The thing that is truly disturbing about this find is that the package of kale was marked 'cut, cleaned and ready to cook'. Many people buy pre-cleaned vegetables to save time and don't expect to have to sift through the package looking for reptiles.

A lot of people will shrug it off when the package tells you that you don’t have to clean your product, and they’ll wash it anyway. They’ll say this is exactly the reason why you shouldn’t trust the ‘pre-cleaned’ vegetable claims.

If something this big can get past quality control, imagine how many tiny things that might get by without either the manufacturer, retailer or customer noticing.

If Goldstein didn't happen to catch sight of the lizard through the clear plastic packaging, she might not have known it was there until she found herself chewing on it. The very thought is enough to inspire a switch to the Paleo diet, except when you think back and remember the gross stories about things that have been found in meats.

Unfortunately, there is no way to keep nature out of our foods grown in nature, and even the most cautious factories can make a mistake occasionally.

The lizard post prompted people to start posting their own disgusting finds in Trader Joe food. One woman posted a picture of a hair sticking out of an ice cream sandwich. "Omg! We had a hair that was 2 feet long that came out of a #traderjoes ice cream sandwich," she wrote.

It was truly revolting.
