Couple Horrified By What They Discovered Inside Their Rental

For couples starting out on their own, renting a place to stay is a fairly common tactic to take. For starters, diving right in and purchasing a home together is rarely a good idea until you know what to expect out of living with each other. No matter how tight knit a couple may be, there’s a feeling out period that goes on to make sure you are in fact a perfect match. Who wants to go through that after you’ve just signed your life away on an expensive house?

There are other benefits to renting as well. While renting doesn’t afford you the opportunity to build up equity in your dwelling, it can often be more cost effective and affordable. If something breaks, the landlord needs to deal with it, as it’s their home when all is said and done. Therein lies the other caveat: it’s their home, and you can sometimes be made to feel as if you’re not as comfortable as you would be in a place you owned yourself. The landlord can pop on over to take a look at a moment’s notice, and there can be endless haggling over what really needs to be fixed and what doesn’t.

As Q13Fox shares, the intrusions can take on different forms as well. A couple from Richmond, Virginia has filed a staggering $1.3 million lawsuit against their landlord accusing him of some unbelievable behavior.

“The man moved into the home he subleased in 2012 from the suspect Tomas Arnaiz. The home was fully furnished, containing among other things, a clock radio,” Q13 reports. “The alleged victim says he and his girlfriend, who was under 18 at the time, were captured by the hidden camera in various stages of undress, CBS 6 reports. They were also filmed while using the restroom and being intimate, the suit alleges.”

The couple was understandably freaked out by what they uncovered, especially since it took them awhile to realize what was happening.

“According to court documents, the victims discovered they were being filmed when they finally noticed that a clock radio, that had previously been unplugged to plug in a guitar amp, had several times been re-positioned and plugged back into the outlet,” Q13 adds. “Now Arnaiz is charged with unlawful filming of a minor, reproducing child porn and producing obscene materials with a minor because the victim’s girlfriend was under 18 when she was recorded. The couple's attorney said they moved out the day after they discovered they were being recorded.”

The videos and pictures were allegedly saved to the landlord’s computer, and authorities reportedly recovered hours of recordings when they arrested him. He’s already been indicted on the charges, and the case will proceed to trial. Andrew Herzog, the attorney representing the couple, notes that this case has far-reaching consequences for other renters out there.

"Now tenants in furnished and other properties, must be aware that there are seemingly innocuous things that can change their lives forever," he said.
