Couple Finds Stinky 'Rubber Rock' On Beach Worth Its Weight In Gold

Recently, Gary and Angela Williams were taking a walk down Middleton Sands beach near Morecambe Bay in England when they noticed an offensive scent wafting in the air. They said it smelled like rotten fish and walked to get a closer look.

They determined it came from a strange-looking rubbery "rock." Soon after, the couple recalled reading an article in the newspaper about ambergris, or whale vomit, and how much it can be worth. It was then that they decided to wrap up the "rock" in a large scarf and take it home to investigate.

Gary stated that the ambergris weighed about 3 and a half pounds. Now, they're in the process of taking bids. It seems they stand to make around $70,000 for their stinky find. Ambergris is also called "floating gold" because of its rarity and high value for perfume makers. It is the hardened intestinal slurry from a sperm whale. In addition, it takes years to form and is believed to protect the animal from hard and sharp objects it eats.

Gary shared, “It smells too bad though. It’s a very distinctive smell, like a cross between squid and farmyard manure. It feels like a rock hard rubber ball. Its texture is like wax, like a candle. When you touch it you get wax sticking to your fingers.”

The couple wants to use the money for a new mobile home. Gary added, "It would be a dream come true." Some larger finds of ambergris have received bids of up to $170,000.
