Astronaut Neil Armstrong's Widow Finds Secret Bag Hidden Away In Closet (Photos)

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on the moon, apparently took home a few souvenirs. The items thought to have been left behind on the moon's surface were actually hidden away in a bag in Armstrong's closet. After his death, his widow found the items.

Carol Armstrong found the bag in the couple's Ohio home after her husband died in 2012. The priceless Apollo 11 items had not seen the light of day for more than 40 years.

The temporary storage bag, known as a 'McDivitt purse,' contained some bits of power cables, small utility lights, utility clamps, an Optical Alignment Sight mirror device, filters, light bulbs, helmet straps, a waste management cover and other such objects. One of the most exciting finds was the 16 mm camera used to film the moon landing and the planting of the flag.

The items were confirmed authentic by Alan Needdell, the curator of the Air and Space Museum. Records show Armstrong was asked about the bag upon arrival back on Earth, and he said, "That [is] just a bunch of trash that we want to take back — LM parts, odds and ends."

Mrs. Armstrong donated the items to the museum. Plans are in the works to put the artifacts on display for the public.
