American Woman Jailed In Abu Dhabi For Refusing Help From Two Strange Men

A 25-year-old American woman allegedly "insulted" the United Arab Emirates for declining help from two men who approached her at the airport. The woman, who has not been named, has now spent the last month in jail. In addition, she is on trial at the Federal Supreme Court and has been charged with insulting the country and its leaders through verbal assault.

She told the court on Monday that she was waiting for a taxi at the Abu Dhabi International Airport when two men approached her and spoke to her in a manner that she did not like. She told the judge, "The men tried to help me. I had another flight to catch at 1:29 a.m."

She continued, "I refused to engage with them and nothing happened." The woman also told the judge she doesn't know why she was on trial. It is unknown if evidence was presented against her.

She was arrested on February 23 and charged with a misdemeanor. A verdict was set for May 2, although she asked the judge if she could pay a fine and be released from jail. The U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi said that it "is aware of the case and is providing consular services."

In the UAE, defamation is treated as a criminal and not a civil matter. Insulting the UAE's leaders or the country can carry a prison sentence and steep fines.
