Altercation Between Off-Duty Officer, Teen May Lead To Criminal Charges

Investigators in Anaheim, California are attempting to unwind the details behind a scary incident involving an off-duty LAPD officer and a group of teens. In the meantime, protesters aren’t waiting for clear-cut answers, and they have gathered at numerous sites to express their outrage.

As KTLA explains, the incident reportedly went down due to the off-duty cop growing increasingly frustrated with a group of teens that were walking across his lawn. An argument developed, and things got physical. The cop fired his gun into the air, and all hell broke loose from that point.

"While physically detaining the juvenile, several houses away from where the initial incident began, several other juveniles became involved and a physical altercation ensued," according to Anaheim Police Chief Raul Quezada.

The off-duty officer claims that he was attempting to detain one of the teens when he was attacked.

“With regard to the off-duty officer, while the evidence was clear and compelling that he did detain the juvenile, and discharged his firearm, there was insufficient evidence at the time to prove the officer’s actions rose to the level of a criminal act," Quezada continued.

Differing accounts have emerged on the incident, including this take from a 13-year-old boy that was at the heart of it.

"I said, 'Hey, that's not how you treat a lady.'And then he came at me. ... He hit me. I ran to the street to run away from him, and he got me," the teen claims.

A neighbor backed up the teen’s story and explains that the off-duty cop was the one who escalated the whole situation.

"This cop is just irate, starts charging after this poor kid and from one thing to the next, it just went from, ‘Hey, don’t talk to her,’ to this kid being dragged," the neighbor said.

Investigators have their work cut out for them on this one, and they continue to sort through statements and videos to figure out what really happened.
