26-Year-Old Man Gets A Dose Of Karma For Raping A 10-Year-Old

A Guatemalan man that was extradited back to the United States after committing an unconscionable crime has learned his fate. Rony Otoniel Mendez, 26, will spend the rest of his life behind bars for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl on multiple occasions. As the Daily Mail reports, the attacks occurred in the bedroom of the girl’s mother, and he impregnated her during one of the assaults.

Doctors had discovered the girl was pregnant during a hospital visit, and the abuse came to light from that point. Mendez assaulted the girl on at least three separate occasions between 2013 and 2014, and he fled the country after he was confronted by the girl’s mother via telephone. He was staying with the family and the attacks occurred while the mother was at work, but he encouraged the girl to keep quiet because “they would both be in trouble.”

The mother had brought the child to the hospital for nauseousness that she worried was caused by recent vaccinations, but a routine urinalysis revealed she was pregnant. The girl didn’t fess up that it was Mendez that had abused her right away, but she came clean after he had left the country and retrieved some belongings from the family’s home. DNA tests would confirm that Mendez was the baby’s father, and the hunt was on for him.

The FBI finally tracked him down and arrested him last year, and he was extradited back to Florida to face charges. It’s unclear if he was initially in the US on a legal basis. He required a translator through the court proceedings and did not speak, but the public defender assigned to the case attempted to poke holes in the girl’s testimony.

That proved to be a fruitless endeavor, as the jury took less than two hours to find him guilty. He has been sentenced to three life sentences without the option of parole.
