Stephen Hawking Says It's Time To Find A New Planet To Live On

When Stephen Hawking talks, it’s probably a good idea to listen. The brilliant physicist has offered up some fascinating thoughts while attending the Starmus Festival in Trondheim, Norway, which celebrates science and the arts. As the Daily Mail shares, the professor touched on topics ranging from President Donald Trump to the end of the world - to even the need for humans to find another planet to live on.

As Hawking sees it, climate change is a real thing, so he’s not a big fan of Trump’s decision to remove the US from the non-binding Paris Climate Change agreement.

“I am not denying the importance of fighting climate change and global warming, unlike Donald Trump, who may just have taken the most serious, and wrong, decision on climate change this world has seen,” he said.

We’ll trust Hawking if he says there’s something to see here on climate change, but we’ll tap the brakes on assuming Trump’s decision to exit an agreement that did nothing to curb pollution from the world’s two largest polluters will move the needle very much. Nonetheless, Hawking indicates that changes are afoot.

“The threats are too big and too numerous. Our physical resources are being drained, at an alarming rate. We have given our planet the disastrous gift of climate change,” Hawking continued. “Rising temperatures, reduction of the polar ice caps, deforestation, and decimation of animal species. We can be an ignorant, unthinking lot.'

So things are going to change for the planet, but where does that leave humans in terms of a place to live? That’s part of the problem, as Hawking explains.

“When we have reached similar crises in our history, there has usually been somewhere else to colonise. Columbus did it in 1492 when he discovered the New World. But now there is no new world. No Utopia around the corner,” he added. “We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds.”

There has always been a ton of talk and speculation about whether or not humans could survive on another planet, and Hawking says it’s high time to find out.

“It is time to explore other solar systems,” Hawking said. “Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth.”

That’s some fascinating food for thought, and if Hawking’s assessment of things is correct, it may be time to kick space exploration into overdrive. Failure to do so could prove fatal for the longevity of future generations on Earth, and Hawking makes it sounds as if that’s almost a foregone conclusion.

Of course, we’re probably a ways away from that happening. On the other hand, it’s never too early to get started. Besides, which generation wouldn’t want to be the one to colonize Mars or some other far off land? That’s an exciting prospect, and you can bet there are some other brilliant minds out there pondering over that fact right about now.
