Judge Gives Muslim Man Dose Of Reality After He Refuses To Swear On The Constitution

A 'stand-in' refused to swear on the Italian Constitution in order to secure citizenship in Italy. After denouncing the country's laws, he was promptly repatriated back to his homeland.

The 33-year-old Imam was acting secretary of a Muslim community in northern Italy. Originally from Morocco, the imam was seeking citizenship in Italy. When it came time for him to swear on the Italian Constitution, he refused.

The man claimed that Italy's laws were 'fully incompatible' with his conservative Muslim beliefs. He called Italy's laws 'a collection of sins upon sins' such as, for example, 'parity between men and women,' according to Interior Minister Angelino Alfano.

Alfano has been campaigning for anti-radicalization laws that would require Muslims to study Italian rules and customs. They would be required to deliver sermons in Italian. The campaign seeks to step up regulations for mosques in Italy.

The imam, after refusing to accept Italian constitutional rights, was promptly put on a plane to Casablanca.
