Woman Asked to Leave Restaurant for Odd Reason

Tammy Birchard, owner of Crossfire Pizzeria in Leesville, Louisiana asked Allie Raby to cover up while breastfeeding. When Raby refused, Birchard asked her to leave. Birchard told KPLC "Her whole breast was out, nipple and all. Being as I have other customers in here, I need to respect the wishes of everyone concerned."

Raby told KALB that when it comes to using a cover, “nobody has time for that!” Birchard, who nursed her three children, she said "You don't see people walking around in Wal-Mart with it wide open, or church, or anything like that." On the other hand, Raby said “we are her customers too, and we just want to feel comfortable as well."

Although Louisiana law permits uncovered breastfeeding in public and private places, Birchard’s restaurant takes a firm stance in the other direction. As a result, a group of Louisiana mothers are planning to stage a “nurse-in” on August 1. After the incident, a sign on the restaurant was put up that read “If you breast-feed, you will need to cover up!!! If you do not, you will be asked to leave!”
