Trump Vows to Issue His Own Executive Orders If Elected President

Despite his criticism of President Obama’s executive orders, Donald Trump declared Sunday that he will take advantage of the same power if he wins this year’s election, The Hill reported.

“I won’t refuse it. I’m going to do a lot of things,” the Republican front-runner said when asked about the issue on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Citing Obama’s unilateral actions on gun control and other policies, he added: “I mean, he’s led the way, to be honest with you.” However, Trump stressed that his executive orders would be for the “right things.” He said he would use the power “much better.”

The president’s most recent orders featured an extension of the background-check system to cover those who buy firearms online and at gun shows, a requirement that all professional gun dealers obtain a federal license, increased funding for mental-health treatment, and the development of technology to make guns safer and easier to track.

Republicans, including most of those seeking the party’s presidential nomination, wasted no time in lashing out against Obama’s actions. The Hill noted that conservatives were already upset about his executive order last year that temporarily delayed the deportation of about 5 million undocumented immigrants. The president also acted on his own in approving a carbon-emissions agreement with China.
