Trump: I Can Fix The System, 'I Know Our Complex Tax Laws Better Than Anyone'

The New York Times dropped a small bombshell over the weekend when they released portions of Donald Trump’s tax return from 1995, which revealed that he took a staggering loss that would have entitled him to not have to pay federal taxes for the next 18 years. As Yahoo reports, what followed was swift reaction from both sides - as well as questions about the legality of the paper’s decision to publish the returns.

The paper claims that an anonymous source had delivered copies of the returns to its headquarters, and they subsequently investigated their validity. Once they were confident with the results of their investigation, they pulled the trigger and published.

“The only news here is that the more than 20-year-old alleged tax document was illegally obtained,” the Trump campaign said in a statement. That, of course, would prompt a reply from Times reporter Susanne Craig.

“I don’t think it’s a crime to check your mailbox,” she said.

Both campaigns would spend the weekend offering up various takes on what the release of the returns signified.

“It reveals the colossal nature of Donald Trump’s past business failures,” said Robby Mook, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager.

“There’s no one who has shown more genius in their way to maneuver around the tax code and to rightfully use the laws to do that,” said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

For Trump’s part, he took to Twitter to respond to the release.

“I know our complex tax laws better than anyone who has ever run for president and am the only one who can fix them,” he wrote.
